My original thought of using Coyote gourds fell through so I cheated and ordered some from Amazon. I received 4 'Cannonball' gourds last week. They are called 'Cannonball' gourds because the shape and size resembles cannonballs from the Civil War era. Although they were dried, they still had to be drilled (for handles) and the center pulp removed. Drilling was easy, I started with a 1/16" bit and worked my way up to 5/8". The sizing of the bits was critical, starting with too large of a bit would crack the shell of the gourd.
Drilling the holes for handles |
The next step was to experiment with different materials to put in the gourds. This started my 'Goldylocks principle', the metal nuts were loud but produced a dead sound, popcorn gave a higher pitch but was too soft, wooden beads gave a loud sound and a sharper sound, beans were too muted, bone beads were similar to the wooden beads with a sharper sound. Since I was making 4 rattles for this project I decided to mix them up.
No.1 has wooden beads only.
No. 2 has wooden beads and a small amount of popcorn.
No.3 has bone beads.
No.4 has wooden and bone beads.
Choosing that proper rattle sound |
I need to get more wooden and bone beads and then the next step will be to install the handles.
I hope Stan read your post!
